www.dermtv.com Concealer. Cleanser. Sunscreen. Blush. Moisturizer. The list of ointments and makeup that women can apply to their face goes on and on, and the order in which they should be applied isn’t so intuitive. Should you apply your sunscreen first or last? What about everything else? Dr. Schultz will explain the proper order for applying everything and why. Transcription The most common mistake that women make in using their sunscreen is not putting it on first on their skin before their moisturizer and their make-up. Many women think, and I understand, that if their sunscreen is closer to the sun on top of their other products, then it will work better and protect them better from the sun. But the reality is, for sunscreens to work, they have to be the first thing applied to the skin because they have to bind to the skin, and there’s a chemical reaction that occurs that makes the sunscreen effective. So please put your sunscreen on first, then apply your moisturizer and then apply your make-up.

Visit savantmd.com formore health tips and videos or follow us on http Here’s another good reason to eat breakfast and to include a whole grain cereal. A preliminary report of a study presented at an American Heart Association’s meeting suggested that eating a whole grain cereal at least twice a week resulted in an 11% reduction in risk for hypertension in men. Eating cereal everyday had a 19% reduction. These results came from a review of the data from the long-running Physicians Health study that had over 13000 participants. As you know, having hypertension increases a person’s risk for heart attack, stroke, and kidney disease. The researchers could only give the results for men since there was not enough data for women, although previous studies have shown that whole grains also benefit a woman’s heart health. A key point to remember is that the cereals were whole grains and not refined grains. Make sure you keep that in mind when choosing your next breakfast cereal. Dr. Mark Savant is a General Internist. ABCD of Skin Cancer Take note of the ABCD Rule for malignant melanoma. If you recognize these signs anywhere on your body, see a health care professional immediately. A stands for asymmetry: The mole, birthmark or other type of blemish anywhere on your skin is not symmetric (same on both sides). B for border: The border of the mole or birthmark is ragged, notched, irregular or blurred. C for color: The mole or blemish is multicolored, consisting of brown, black, red, blue or white in varying shades and patterns. D for diameter: The mole or blemish is more than ¼ inch (6mm) across in size. Diameter (the size of a pencil eraser or larger) Identification • Monthly body checks will alert any changes in pigment of moles or new “moles” that appear. Stand in front of a mirror minus your clothes and remember the ABCD Rules. Look carefully for any abnormalities on your skin. Use a hand mirror to check your back and other body parts you can’t easily see. Incidence of malignant melanoma among men appearing on their backs is high and the area should be checked regularly. Significance • While melanoma accounts for 4 percent of all skin cancers, malignant melanoma causes the greatest number of skin cancer–related deaths worldwide, according to Dr. Susan M. Swetter, director of the Pigmented Lesion and Cutaneous Melanoma Clinic. Catching it early will decrease your mortality rate. Early childhood exposure to severe sunburn blisters increases one’s risk later in life to developing

The Right Way To Drink Water By Dr. Willie T. Ong for ABS-CBN’s Salamat Dok Our bodies are made up of mostly water. Just look at the facts: The brain contains 74% water, blood contains 83% water, lean muscle has 75% and bone has 22% water. Experts agree that water is one of the most powerful forms of treatment. So how come most people don’t drink enough water? 10 Health Benefits of Water: 1. Water prevents kidney stones. The most common cause of kidney stones is not drinking enough water. Since water dissolves the substances that form stones in the urine, drinking 12 glasses daily helps treat kidney stones. 2. Water treats urinary tract infection. The more water you drink, the more you will urinate. “Drinking lots of water will help flush out harmful bacteria from your bladder,” says Medical City kidney specialist Dr. Roberto Tanchanco. 3. Water helps patients with diarrhea by preventing dehydration. As a first-aid for diarrhea, you can make your own oral rehydration solution at home. Mix a glass of water with 2 teaspoons sugar and ¼ teaspoon salt, and drink as much as you can tolerate. This is similar to the dextrose solution in the hospital. 4. Water helps reduce fever. For symptoms of flu, water can help lower your body temperature when you urinate the “heat” out of your body. If you’re sick, drink more water for you to recover faster. 5. Water helps treat cough and colds, sore throat, and respiratory infections. Water helps loosen sticky phlegm. A respected lung

Eat Red Foods For Your Heart Dr. Willie T. Ong (Tips from Doctors Willie and Liza Ong of ABS-CBN’s Salamat Dok) Are you worried about your heart? Don’t feel blue. Go red, and eat red foods for your heart. This novel idea comes from the American Heart Association, which advocated that men and women eat red-colored foods to protect their hearts. 1. Red apples. Apples are rich in quercetins, a substance known to protect against Alzheimer’s disease and many cancers. Studies show that people who eat an apple a day have lower chances of getting lung cancer and Alzheimer’s disease when compared to non-fruit eaters. Even smokers who often eat apples can somehow minimize the risk of getting cancer. Apple skins contain pectin, which some studies show can lower bad cholesterol by as much as 16%. Apples may also prevent diabetes and childhood asthma. Eating the fiber-rich skin of the apple also has additional health benefits of having better skin, more regular bowel movement and lower risk for colon cancer. 2. Red watermelon. According to the US Department of Agriculture, watermelon may be beneficial for the heart and blood vessels. Researchers report that eating watermelons increases our body’s arginine levels, an important amino acid (Journal of Nutrition, March 2007). Arginine is a component needed to produce nitric oxide, a substance that relaxes the blood vessels, improves blood flow and may protect us from a heart attack and stroke. The deep-red watermelon variety contains the
