Home improvement doesn’t just mean improving your house. The analogy relates directly to your own life in recovery. When you are in recovery from addiction, you are making improvements to your mind, body and spirit. If you don’t tune your mind, body and spirit on a daily basis you may jeapordize your recovery journey. Let’s examine this analogy together.

One of the things that a recovering addict may overlook in the course of their recover are small details like methodologies to manage cravings, control triggers and in building a support system. Obviously, if you overlook these details you may relapse. Think about how you might relate this to our analogy.

For example, if you wanted to paint a room in your house and you forgot the paint, the room wouldn’t look new again, right? No, it wouldn’t. So don’t forget what addiction recovery means. When you get educated about recovery from addiction, it isn’t just words and instructions in your head. Recovery from addiction is an art form that you must execute on a daily basis. It’s no different from applying paint on the walls of your house to make it look new again.

Remember, you CAN and WILL recover if you train yourself in applying the techniques of recovery on a daily basis. It’s all about application and not just observation. If you are dedicated to getting into recovery, you must walk the walk and not just talk the talk. There’s always something you can do to improve your recovery process. What can you do right now? Stop reading and start doing.

Addiction Recovery Tip #7 – Reconnect

Anyone who has ever been addicted to a drink, smoke or a drug has a story to tell about someone they’ve hurt in the past. It could be a friend, family member, co-worker, neighbor or someone you don’t even know. At some point in your recovery, you should take responsibility for the pain you may have inflicted on others or for the way you isolated yourself and lost touch with your peers.

Reconnect with people you’ve lost touch with. Often times when we have an addiction it overtakes other areas of our lives. This can lead to lost contact with old friends or relatives. Make a pact with yourself to call someone each week that you’ve lost touch with. If they seem hesitant to hear from you because they were aware of your addiction, explain that you’ve overcome it and you are working on improving your life. This is also a great technique to try when you are alone and feeling tempted. Hearing the joy in someone’s voice when they realize you are trying to make a positive change is a great impetus for staying clean.

This might be someone you were once very close with or even an old college buddy. Regardless of how much time has passed between conversations or contact, people are generally genuinely excited to hear from someone from their past. It’s also a great way to remind yourself of who you were before the addiction owned your life. This is a great method of reminding yourself of why people enjoyed your company before your addiction and it will likely inspire you to want to be a newer, better and stronger version of the person you were before.

Addiction Recovery Tip #6 – Substitution

Many people in recovery look for a substitute to their addiction to maintain their recovery. If you do this however, you should find a healthy substitute. Here is an example of a healthy way to support your recovery from addiction.

If your addiction was to nicotine, there are many substitutes to take its place. Consider sucking on peppermints or chewing sugar-free gum. If you were addicted to alcohol, having a water bottle nearby or switching to diet soda will help. You need to find something to replace the substance you’ve vowed to remove from your life.

You may need some help with this and there are a lot of great resources out there. One is to consult with a medical professional. This is particularly pertinent if you were one of the many folks addicted to prescription medications. A qualified doctor will be able to suggest methods of moving past the pain you may be feeling; the same pain that drew you to the medication in the first place.

Be mindful of not turning to food as a replacement. There’s an old adage that suggests that once a person gives up smoking, they pack on the pounds. This isn’t all that far from the truth. Sugar is a great way to get a quick, albeit innocent rush. Too much sugar will eventually cause havoc with your body and you’ll likely notice the scale inching up. Instead turn to another substitute and save healthy foods for your meals.

Boredom is one of the great dangers to anyone who is new to recovery. It’s very tempting to pick up a drink, smoke or a drug when you are alone in your head. Here is a great way to tackle boredom and avoid substance abuse.

Start a new hobby. One of the most challenging aspects of recovery is trying not to dwell on how great it would feel to indulge your addiction again. If you take up a new hobby, be it gardening, painting or writing, you’ll devote less time to thinking about your addiction. Choose either a hobby you gave up years ago or something new.

It can be virtually anything and you may want to think outside the lines in terms of what an interesting hobby is. Kite making is a great way to invest your time in something fun. It doesn’t take a lot of know-how and if you are handy, you’ll be able to create a simple kite in a couple of hours.

Another fun and not often enjoyed hobby is photography. Although almost everyone has taken pictures at some point in their life, not many have pursued this as a hobby. You don’t need an expensive camera, a good quality digital one will do. Then get snapping and take images of anything appealing to you, be it nature, architecture or animals. You may surprise yourself with how great the pictures turn out.

The main point here is to keep yourself occupied. When you pass the time in a way that is healthy and fun, you can avoid cornering yourself with self-destructive patterns.

When you are using substances, it’s very easy to get caught up in an unhealthy lifestyle that lacks proper physical maintenance. You may have noticed that days or even weeks pass by before you look in the mirror and see the detrimental impact of addiction on your body. Therefore, don’t forget to exercise! Aerobic and weightlifting activities are great practices to get involved in as you begin your journey on the road to recovery.

Hit the gym after a bad day at work. The stress you are likely to feel after arguing with a co-worker or having to finish a detailed project by a specific deadline can make the idea of a drink very tempting. Replacing that with exercise has so many benefits. Not only will the urge to take a drink pass but you’ll feel calmer and more relaxed once the adrenaline kicks in. In addition you’ll get into better shape.

One of the many drawbacks of being addicted is the damage it can leave in its wake on a person’s physique. People in recovery can often be out of shape and overweight. If you aren’t comfortable with the idea of sporting some spandex and hitting the equipment at a local gym, start your own exercise regime at home.

This may involve something as simple as taking a walk after a bad day or riding an exercise bike while watching the nightly news. If you can take your frustration and pent up aggression and translate that into physical exercise you’ll benefit in numerous ways.

Addiction Recovery Tip #3 – Change Your Patterns

Have you noticed any patterns in your life that have contributed to your addiction? Are you doing something week after week that almost always leads to trouble? Then here is an example of how you can change your unhealthy patterns.

Go bowling on your “regular drinking night.” If you’ve spent every Friday or Saturday night for the last ten years (before recovery) drinking at a local bar, venture out for a night of bowling instead. Bowling is one of those “sports” that you don’t have to be good at. If you’re a parent, drag your kids along and make it a family night of fun. Chances are you’ll create a new tradition to replace the way you’ve spent your time the last decade. A great bonus is that you will be with your kids and to them it’s going to mean the world.

If you can’t see yourself donning bowling shoes and hitting the lanes, pick another activity that you enjoy more. Mini-golfing is great fun as is visiting an amusement park. The main idea with this recovery tip is finding an activity that will replace your unhealthy pattern of behavior. If you instead sit at home alone on the night you devoted to getting drunk or high, you will be much more likely to fall right back into that pattern of behavior.

It certainly doesn’t need to be the same activity week after week either. Make it a fun night and change up the routine. Maybe take in a movie at the local theater or go see a play. You can also watch a little league baseball game or cheer on the local soccer team. Just be sure that on that night of the week, you aren’t alone with too much time to think.

Addiction Recovery Tip #2 – Refocus Your Finances

Have you ever thought about how much money could be saved and productively used if you stopped drinking, smoking or drugging? Here is a great way to refocus your finances so you can open your mind, expand your horizons, and benefit your life.

Take a trip. If you calculate all the money you would have spent on your addiction in a year, had you not entered recovery, you can invest that money in some fun. Take a trip somewhere you’ve always wanted to go. Perhaps it’s a safari in the jungles of Africa or a visit to the ski slopes. Choose a destination and then spend your time there enjoying every minute of it. This is a productive use of your finances and will provide you with positive memories rather than the negative experiences that result from addiction.

One of the challenges of traveling is avoiding temptation. If your weakness was found in a bottle of liquor, ensure that you aren’t putting yourself in a situation that encourages you to take a drink. Many of the all-inclusive vacation packages include all the alcohol beverages you can drink. Avoid this and instead opt for a week in a mountain cabin, canoeing and hiking through the wilderness. Tempting yourself unnecessarily isn’t going to help in the long run at all. Instead plan a trip that encourages you to stay clean.

Next time you think about picking up a drink, drug or a cigarette, remember that the cash you’re spending could be used for a better purpose. There’s a whole world for you to explore but spending money on substances will hinder that opportunity.

Addiction Recovery Tip #1 – Choose Your Friends Wisely

When you are overcoming an addiction there are things you can do to help the process along. Although it’s best viewed as a day-to-day journey, the following tips can help make the road to recovery a little easier. Some are serious, others are silly, but they all can be used to help you make each day worth your while by staying away from your addiction. Here’s the first tip:

Surround yourself with positive people. This almost goes without saying, but if you spend time with people who are invested in seeing you continue to stay clean, you’ll have a much better chance of doing so. You may have to exclude certain individuals from your life including those who encourage you to just have “one drink.” If someone isn’t trying to help you stay sober, you don’t need them in your life. Friendships should never be based on negative behavior patterns.

Unfortunately this may also include family members or close friends. Quite often when a person is addicted those closest to them can’t recognize that there’s a problem. Instead of helping them by encouraging them to steer clear of the substance they are abusing and focusing on getting well, they enable them. Cut out everyone who isn’t invested in seeing you get well again.

Although this can be difficult to do you need to stand your ground and simply state that your primary concern is beating your addiction and if someone can’t encourage that, they can’t have a place in your life. Stay firm on this and don’t waver.
