Sorry, I don’t want to be such a spoilsports and dampen your holiday spirit. But studies have shown that a lot of accidents happens at certain time of the year, especially around the 4th of July in the US and during the holiday season. Here are the reasons why

Alcohol

Drinking alcohol is all part of the New Year’s celebrations. And we all know that drinking and driving do not mix. According to Dr. Thomas J. Esposito, a trauma surgeon at Loyola University Health System in Maywood, Ill., as interviewed by the New York Times:

“Any degree of alcohol increases the chances your judgment or coordination can be impaired, whether on New Year’s Eve or any other day. Alcohol is associated with 50 percent of the injuries we see in the emergency rooms.”

However, it is not only the drivers who should pay attention to their blood alcohol levels. The NYT report continues to point out that pedestrians should take care as well. In fact, a study have shown that

“January 1 (New Year’s Day) has more pedestrian crash deaths on average, plus it has the fifth largest number of deaths per day overall, also due to alcohol impairment.”

The NYT report gives the following safety advice to inebriated pedestrians on New Year’s Day:

  • Stay and drink in one place. Avoid moving from one place to another.
  • Call a cab or get a ride with a “sober” driver.
  • Walk with a “sober” buddy.
  • Walk in a large group.
  • Wear lightly colored clothes to make you visible to drivers. Reflectors are especially useful.

Weather

If you are celebrating in the northern hemisphere, you know how the weather is at this time of the year. Even a sober driver can have problems with icy streets and snowstorms. For pedestrians, icy streets are fall hazards. Combined with alcohol, it can be fatal.

Now, if you are celebrating in the tropics or in the southern hemisphere, you have to deal with other climate hazards. In Australia, barbecue parties are very popular during the holidays but the risk of bush fires is rather high at this time of the year.

In addition, alcohol and heat can be a fatal combination that lead to drowning, heatstroke, as well medical conditions such as cardiovascular events.

Food

We eat more than we are supposed to at this time of the year. It is only expected that some adverse effects can come with it.

We’ve tackled this topic many times on this site so I don’t want to say much more. Too much fat, too much calories, and too much sugar can wreak havoc with our body. However, aside from these usual culprits, foodborne outbreaks caused by such nasty bugs like Salmonella and Campylobacter have been reported during celebrations with severe and sometimes fatal consequences.

In addition, a high incidence of food allergies also needs to be reckoned with at this time of the year.

Fireworks

In many countries, fireworks are part of the New Year’s celebrations. However, fireworks can be very dangerous if not handled correctly. Injuries due to fireworks are widely reported the world over, with the highest in the age group 5 to 14 years of age in India. Injuries were serious, even fatal. In the US,  a study released in 2006 reported the following:

“An estimated 85800 pediatric fireworks-related injuries were treated in US emergency departments during the 14-year study period. Injured children had a mean age of 10.8 years, and 77.9% were male. Fireworks users accounted for 49.5% of the injuries, whereas 22.2% of the injuries were to bystanders; however, user status could not be determined in 28.3% of cases. The overall fireworks-related injury rate decreased significantly during the study period, but subgroup analysis did not indicate consistent declines among all ages and types of fireworks. Injuries were most commonly caused by firecrackers (29.6%), sparklers/novelty devices (20.5%), and aerial devices (17.6%). The most commonly injured body sites were the eyeball (20.8%), face (20.0%), and hands (19.8%), and the most common injury type was burns (60.3%). Approximately 91.6% of all children with fireworks-related injuries were treated and released from hospital emergency departments, 5.3% were admitted, and 2.3% were transferred to another institution. Bystanders accounted for 13.3% of admitted cases and 20.6% of transferred cases.”

Alzheimer’s Disease and Symptoms

Alzheimers disease has become very popular among a number of patients in the countries like the US, especially, in the older patients. The patients suffering with the disease face significant complications in thinking, understanding and communicating. A disease leads to a severe damage in the brain and memory. The sickness leads to negative affects in a person’s normal family life, social gathering and a normal individuality. The disease shows a slow progress inside the brain resulting in a severe grievance in the memory. It creates a disturbance in almost all those works which are been derived by the brain. Many times, the sickness takes years to increase. This mental illness can occur due to an injury inside the brain, an existence cancerous cells or tumors, hypertension or high blood pressure, diabetes, coronary artery disease or an increasing level of cholesterol in the blood. Medical experts say that the person, who has a less grade of education, can also develop this disease.

The illness begins with a simple kind of confusion and memory loss, which later develops a significant difficulty in the learning, assuming and imaging process inside the brain. Memory loss is one of the most imperative Alzheimers symptoms. The person who suffers with the illness can forget even recent conversations and appointments. He/she can forget or misplace important things, can forget names and they can even keep things in wrong places. They can also have problems related to alphabets and numbers. The patient will also face difficulty in searching correct words, sentences, time and dates. They can even be uncomfortable in some certain situations and even inside his/her own family or friends. The disease can also lead to extreme anxiety, aggressiveness, social departure, increase in stubbornness and severe mood swings. These kinds of people loss their conviction. The patient will also face problems in everyday works like cooking and those works, which need a proper preparation.

Usually, the physical expert diagnosis the sickness through the patient’s current health and mental status and the earlier period of his illness. These conditions help the doctors to have a go for a correct treatment. In this judgment the doctors check how much the patient is facing problem in daily work, if the patient has a History of any mental disorder, his memory, employment standing and his/her reactions in some significant situations. The doctors also check if the patient is taking any kind of medications or drugs. The other tests include a mini-mental state exam like for example his counting skills, skills of solving problems and most importantly, the patient’s skills of concentration.

In a treatment process of Alzheimer, the medical experts suggest medications including some therapeutic methods for the treatment. Currently, the US Food and Drug Association or FDA has approved two categories of medications in the treatment of the disease. These medications are named as partial glutamate antagonists and cholinesterase inhibitors. These medications do not give a complete cure but can provide a relief to the disorder to certain extend. The medications named as Cholinesterase inhibitors or ChEIs like the rivastigmine or Exelon, donepezil hydrochloride or Aricept, rivastigmine or Exelon, and tacrine or Cognex. These medications are been approved by the Food and Drug Association or FDA. The medical studies say that the patient sufferings with the sickness have a significant lack in the chemical neurotransmitters inside the brain, which is known as acetylcholine. It is a very important element inside the brain, which leads in the configuration of new memories. The medications CHEIS helps to reproduce the acetylcholine elements produce and improve new memories. The other medications partial glutamate antagonists help to maintain the level of glutamate inside the brain.

Medical experts say that Glutamate is a very important excitatory neurotransmitter inside the brain and an extra production of these elements can lead to negative affects inside the brain. There are also some other kind treatments, which are known as non-medication based treatments. These methods of treatment help to maximize the patient’s involvement and improvement in the events and other works of the society. Like for example providing guidance to the patient’s standing, sitting, walking and talking methods. The other process is known as Cognitive rehabilitation, where the medical experts suggest the patient to apply computer programs and train the memory. Some other medications include trazodone or Dessyrel, antipsychotics, anxiolytics and mood-stabilizing anticonvulsants. Some of the atypical antipsychotic agents like risperidone or Rispeerdal, olanzapine or Zyprexa or Zydis, Geodon or Ziprasisone etc. The patients who are suffering with anxiety or depression are suggested to have an intake of fluoxetine, citalopram, setraline or Zoloft etc. These medications are known as serotonin reuptake inhibitors. The patients who are suffering with insomnia due to Alzheimer are generally advised to have an intake of trazodone or Desyrel. Physical experts also suggest the patients to adopt measures to improve the sleep process and reduce the intake of nighttime medications.

How My Skin Condition Devastated Me – Part II

June 10, 2020 by

This is the second in a series of articles by Johnny Palmer of AbsRightNow.com. He talks about how his skin condition turned his life into bouts of depression, nothingness and how he has used this unfortunate illness to his advantage and how it has changed the way he lives for the better.

At the end of my last article I mentioned about how I was feeling from my ever-worsening skin condition. I had sailed from job to job, often leaving or not showing up to work because of the horrible feeling that comes along with feeling like some sort of freak.

Now that I think about it, people are generally nice, and I doubt that many people would have thought this if they passed me by, but we are always far more critical of ourselves than others are of us, and in a way this can be very self destructing.

I left off where I was spending the bulk of my time in my bedroom & loafing around the house living with my mother and family. My mother said that one day I was supposed to be hanging out washing but she said I was standing at the washing line staring out over the houses in the valley and on the hill on the other side of where we lived.

At the time, I wasn’t sure what was causing my chronic skin problem, but seeing as I had suffered “eczema” for most of my life, I just presumed that like most other sufferers, I would either outgrow it or be stuck with it for life.

I remember reading J.P Morgan’s autobiography and discovering he had suffered from a chronic skin condition also – rosacea. His condition however became a source of strength for him as he grew older – he was far too powerful to let it effect him and it seemed as though he was over-confident and dared people to look at him and comment. He too hated being photographed and went great lengths to stop it – I still hate being photographed to this day.

Back to my bedroom, I would pour over pages of the internet trying to find out what had helped other sufferers to cure their skin condition or at least to be able to control it to some degree, but most of what I tried had zero to near zero effect on reducing itching, redness, dryness and the unsightly bloody mess it left, and then the large unexplainable rashes on my arms, chest, neck and face.

It seemed that all I could find were “magic bullets”.

I ordered creams from strange corners of the world, visited different doctors in my town and some from out of town numerous times. I swapped doctors many times, often seeking out specialists who would prescribe dangerously high levels of cortisone (steroid) containing creams, which would solve the problem momentarily, but never for long.

Most of the creams available on prescription are not suitable at all for sensitive skin, so 90% of them I couldn’t use anyway, and the ones I could use were so high in cortisone that they thin the level of your skin down if you use them too much.

I remember reading somewhere that it is best to not use any creams, moisturizers or other bodily soaps or liquids, so I completely abandoned everything.

This lead to pure hell.

Without using the steroid cream to heal old wounds, I would end up waking in the night to discover I had scratched my skin raw until it was oozing liquid or bleeding, then not be able to get back to sleep because of the itch. When I finally did get to sleep after a chronic episode of scratching, I would often sleep up to 12 hours to let my body try to heal the damage, and because I didn’t want to go anywhere.

Often it was just at night that it happened, but sometimes it would just happen – I would get itchy as hell. I wanted to start doing Karate but as soon as I got even slightly warm I would get an attack, let alone dripping with sweat. The worst thing about it was that I couldn’t go out and stay with friends, go away on holidays or stay away from home because then others would know what I did, and it would either scare them silly or I would be a real freak. Having massive red patches on your face and all over your body isn’t fun when you are surrounded by your friends who all have perfect skin and look amazing – even sporting severe hangovers.

I just can’t describe how much I wanted to be normal.

How My Skin Condition Devastated Me ImageHangovers were something I ended up getting familiar with – sometimes I would drink so much I would pass out and wake up not having scratched at all. I actually thought that this had cured me, just drinking so much that I passed out, but often the scratching just got intensified if I drank.

The nights after the drinking were the worst.

I couldn’t get to sleep because I had been up all day, and there must be something in the drink that my body can’t handle, because Mondays were always spent in bed, even my friends and family asked me why I stayed in my room for a few days after drinking and never really came out.

Back to trying to find a cure.

The amount of diets, detoxes, herbs, pills, creams, therapy, doctors visits, specialist consultations and other “professional” help that I sought would blow your mind.

Most 18 year olds spend their cash on chicks, cars and booze.

Yes I had a car and brought booze – but the majority of my pay check always went to whatever it was I was trying to help rid my disease at the time.

Here are a few things I tried:

  • Prescription creams – $34 for doctor visit + prescription costs
  • TCM (traditional chinese medicine) – over $100 per week
  • Accupuncture – $45 per session
  • Organ/blood stimulation – $65 per session
  • Dermatologists – $95 per session + prescription costs
  • Allergy tests – $35 every time (there are a LOT of different tests)
  • Special bedding/detergent – not a major cost
  • Creams from “interesting” countries – up to $79 per container

I can’t remember all of the things I tried, but these are a few – it seemed that every time I asked somebody if they could help, no matter what their profession they smiled $)  and said “yes of course we can help”.

I learned never to ask a salesman if you need what he is selling.

After a few years of trying different approaches to fixing my skin condition, I gave up the fight.

I came extremely close to departing permanently, and to some people it may seem stupid to think about passing on through just because of a skin problem.

Until you have a bright red rash, disfigured skin, your face being a combination of red/yellow and white patches and your entire body covered in a rash that would look at home on somebody who has just crashed their road bike on a highway – you don’t know what you are talking about.

I would lie to people and say I was in a skateboarding accident, I ran through a rose patch or something equally stupid, I just couldn’t tell people I had a skin condition – it was like I didn’t want anyone to know for some reason, even though they could obviously see if I saw them on a regular basis my skin was always a mess.

It was around this time that I started drugs.

To be continued … the next part of this series will be up soon.

Could Internet Addiction Be Ruining Your Diet?

Too much of anything is a poison, but have you ever thought that you might be spending too much time on your computer?  Apparently some psychologists have too, since they’ve not only coined a term for it (Internet Addiction Disorder) but are arguing for it to be included in the DSM as its own psychological disorder.

The proponents of the theory argue that IAD can be an addiction that has the potential to destroy relationships and foster social anxiety.  The criteria they use for diagnosis is pretty much copied and pasted from gambling addiction, which is apparently the most similar disorder they could find that didn’t involve substance abuse.

Others, however, see internet use as nothing more than harmless socialization, just through a different modality.  To them, any psychological disorders that one would develop from overusing the interweb could be attributed to exacerbation of existing disorders.  The fact that the internet is relatively new and that there’s only a handful of studies done on IAD so far doesn’t help either side substantiate their claims, but regardless of whether or not you think it is a legitimate disorder, there have been a good number of studies done that have identified a causal relationship between internet use and social anxiety.

One of these studies, done a couple years ago by two professors from Monash and Swinburne University in Australia, found that although the subjects’ social anxiety about online interactions had decreased with excessive internet use, they conversely showed higher levels of anxiety in real life social situations.

As we all know, anxiety releases the “stress hormone” cortisol, which causes your liver to release glucose, your muscles to release amino acids, and all sorts of things that aren’t really important as long as you know that it causes weight gain and diabetes if you let it get bad enough.  So with this in mind, you could say that spending extended periods of time on the internet can increase your social anxiety, in turn causing your catabolism to increase along with your blood glucose and insulin levels, leading to weight gain.

Cell Phones and Cancer: An International Cover Up or an Incitement of Mass Hysteria?

Although the debate regarding cell phones and brain tumors has been raging since the devices became prevalent in the 90s, recent revelations in its proponents’ partiality has done little to convince any believers otherwise.  Back in May, the results of the long awaited, decade long international Interphone study were released, proving to be as inconclusive as we all thought it would be, equivocally stating that “the possible effects of long-term heavy use of mobile phones require further investigation.” It doesn’t help that the study was funded by the Mobile Manufacturers’ Forums (an international association of telecom manufacturers) and the GSM Association (a manufacturer of mobile phones).

Most of the studies that have found a connection between cell phones and cancer have been too small to be heard over the larger, more heavily funded studies.  Take for instance, Dr. George Carlo, who was hired to head a $28 million research program.  Apparently he didn’t get the memo, since he was fired shortly after he released a statement announcing that there was an evident connection between brain cancer deaths and cell phones.  A group of scientists for the WHO’s International Agency for Research on Cancer, IARC, came forward last month with a list of scientists that they accused of being biased by being previously long term employees of Motorala and other cell phone manufacturers.

Regardless of whether you believe there is an international cover up going on, or whether mobile phone companies are simply avoiding any mass hysteria, it’s better to be safe than sorry.  Try to avoid sleeping next to your phone, and keep the phone at least one inch away from your ear at all times.  Even if the phone is turned off, the electrical fields dissipate quickly, but the magnetic fields are not only the ones that have been linked to cancer, but take much longer to dissipate.  Using the speaker phone or your blue tooth as much as possible will also help reduce your exposure from the radiation, as well as make it easier to talk while you’re driving without getting a ticket.

Also, wearing earrings can actually put you more at risk.  The metal can actually retain the magnetic field, prolonging your exposure to the radiation even after you’ve put the phone down.  This holds true for other pieces of jewely as well.  For instance, wearing a metal watch near a satellite dish for your internet will conduct the magnetic fields along your acupuncture meridians, which are actually known to make you more susceptible to cancer.

Although the cell phone companies’ constant pressure on research groups definitely does not look good, it still is not proof there is in fact no causal relationship between cell phones and cancer.  But hey, there must be something to it if they’re spending this much money stopping the truth from getting out, right?

What you should know about Cocaine addiction and its dangerous effects

June 10, 2020 by

What You Should Know About Cocaine Addiction And It’s Dangerous Effects

Cocaine addiction and its dangerous effects can actually kill a person. Cocaine takes control of the brain cells that control mood and pleasure sensations. Too much cocaine will permanently alter the way the brain perceives pleasure.

Cocaine can come in powder or crystal form and can be mixed with sugar, corn starch, talcum powder and even amphetamines. In most cases, the user sniffs the powder through the nose and it will absorb into the bloodstream through the nasal cavity. Other users rub the powder on their gums or even swallow it. Injecting cocaine produces an immediate high, but that means a higher risk of a overdose. Some of the street names of cocaine are rock, snow, blow, C, coke, crack and freebase. “Crack” is a form of cocaine that has been designed for smoking, and will make a cracking sound when heated.

What are some side effects of cocaine abuse?

Years ago, cocaine was used during surgery because it has a numbing effect on tissues that it touches. It was also thought that cocaine would help with depression and with other addictions. It was considered sage and was even added to a popular soft drink, until it was finally banned and removed in 1929. It could also be found in cough syrups and various other home remedies. Most physicians in those days widely approved of the use of cocaine for a variety of illnesses.

How cocaine makes you you feel depends on your age, your mood, whether you have medical or mental problems, how much you use, how often and how long you use it and whether you have consumed alcohol or other drugs while using cocaine. High doses of cocaine can result in violent behavior, panic attacks, paranoia and hallucinations. The effects of cocaine can be felt in 30-45 seconds and it will last for 10 to 20 minutes. If smoked, the effects start within seconds and lasts about 10 minutes. Effects of snorting cocaine begin in only a few seconds and last 15 to 30 minutes.

Abusing cocaine can cause adverse effects on your body, as well, and can cause heart rate to rise, increases blood pressure, dilates pupils, increases body temperature and constricts blood vessels. It also decreases appetite and you could become malnourished. Other symptoms are headaches, gastrointestinal problems, nausea and abdominal pain. Snorting cocaine can result in nosebleeds, diminished sense of smell, difficulty swallowing, runny nose, and hoarseness. If cocain is injected, you run the risk of getting a disease like HIV/AIDS, hepatitis and other diseases.

When high on cocaine, a person feels talkative, energetic, alert and their sexual senses are more aroused. Some people say it makes them more confident and relaxed, while other say it makes them agitated and nervous. These same people believe that they are in control of their cocaine use, and that the can stop anytime they want. The truth is, they will usually suffer relapse again and again unless they get professional addiction treatment.

Is society to blame for the cocaine epidemic?

In some respects, society plays a big part in why some people feel inclined to need mood-altering substances. Most young adults today are pressured to accomplish high goals in all areas of their lives and the stress can become too much. Some turn to alcohol, others turn to drugs as a way to take the edge off their nerves.

Another way society plays a role in drug abuse stems from movies, songs and games that portray drugs or alcohol as an acceptable form of recreation. Some movies have led young minds to think that being high is funny and that its what everybody does to have a good time. These young kids think that if the movie stars are doing drugs or alcohol, it is okay for them, too. Sadly, they only see the fun side of drug use. If they could see their favorite actor during detox in a rehab, they might feel differently about using drugs.

Myra Lemmons is a freelance writer who is currently creating content for drug rehabilitation websites. She strives to educate readers about the dangers of drugs and alcohol, and hopes to encourage addicts to seek help from professional cocaine detox centers. How Accurate Is Muscle Testing?

Muscle testing is a noninvasive method of diagnosing health problems and possible treatments by checking a muscle’s strength or weakness. This is one of the diagnostic tools, along with lab tests, client history and others, utilized by an interdisciplinary health care system called Applied Kinesiology.

Is muscle testing accurate?

Proponents of muscle testing will say “yes” and opponents will say “no.” To a degree, each is correct. Muscle testing can be remarkably accurate when utilized by skilled individuals who have been extensively trained, with at least 300 hours of training or more. Some individuals even have college or university degrees for much more than just muscle testing.

Muscle testing was used in the 1930’s in the United States, 30 years before Applied Kinesiology was developed in 1964. A chiropractor, Dr. George J. Goodheart, Jr., developed Applied Kinesiology as an interdisciplinary health care system that would utilize more than just muscle testing for diagnoses and treatments. He did find that muscle testing could be tremendously beneficial in gaining information to help a patient with health problems.

Many healthcare professionals throughout the earth use muscle testing to help with making diagnoses and treatments. Many have seen excellent results from properly using muscle testing and many patients and clients will agree.

However, as with any profession, there are healthcare professionals who are not as adept at the profession, as others are, or they may even be incompetent. Some of these individuals may be in this profession just because it offers significant money.

Why have some people considered alternative healthcare?

Because conventional medical practices and treatments are not getting the results many patients want, in some instances these patients are looking at alternative treatments. They are considering chiropractors, naturopaths and acupuncturists, among others. Some of these healthcare professionals were medical doctors at one time, and who became discouraged when unable to help their patients as they felt they should. These professionals found that alternative healthcare was what could do the job. These individuals are exceptionally skilled at what they do, and many utilize muscle testing.

Since the body functions as a single unit, muscle testing of one muscle or group of muscles will give the body’s reaction to certain questions, substances or situations. Properly phrased, explicit questions with a single answer, utilized by a skilled tester can yield valuable information that a healthcare professional can use to benefit a client or patient. This can help the professional determine what course of treatment can make a positive difference to a client’s health.

How can one be sure results are accurate?

A client should always learn how to self-test. Not only does this let him double check to make sure the healthcare professional is gaining accurate data, it helps the client stay in touch with his body and what is happening to it. A client should always be aware of the state of his body. He can quiz his body about each organ and how well it is functioning, his circulatory system, and his immune system. He can also ask any other question in order to understand his body‘s health level.

Note: One should never ask a question when one does not want to know the answer. One should ask questions that need answers and require action.

Sometimes, one experiences an odd feeling or sensation that can be unnerving. Asking one’s body if this is something worrying and getting a negative answer can be reassuring. It just may be the body adjusting something. Another time, it could be chest pain. Is it a heart attack or just a rib out of place? If one’s body indicates a problem with the heart, then one knows to go to the hospital.

Can muscle testing be accurate? Yes, it can be exceedingly accurate in the hands of competent individuals. Also, if there is a way to double check information, one should do that. This can give peace of mind that information obtained is correct. It can also build confidence in one’s healthcare professional and can keep one in touch with how his body is doing.

He can also ask any other question in order to understand his body’s health level.

Altogether, one can be reassured that the correct treatments are being done in regard to improving his health.

It’s natural to encounter a sexual problem in a relationship at certain point, especially when it ages overtime. Sometimes difficulties can also show up because of illness and sometimes just because of natural reasons like lowered desire level after pregnancy, generally it gets neutralized with time and perfect understanding… but sometimes it gets out of the boundary of normal sexual disorder and things get really messy to a point when the whole relationship comes under threat. Reduced sexual disorder can be experienced by both partners, but usually women are more likely to experience the same earlier in a relationship. However problems like delayed orgasm, painful intercourse , problems with getting sexually aroused can be experienced, as I have told earlier …minor problems get neutralized on their own when given sufficient time but complex problems may require help of specialists.

In most of the cases the reason of the problem happens to be physiological, however the reason can also be psychological and related to the non sexual part of the relationship, it is said that the sexual relationship in bed actually represents the whole relationship, therefore an increased sexual problem could be a good indication that there might be something wrong outside the bedroom too.

Little things like unspoken anger, unfairness between partners can lead to low desire level, it has been seen that lowered desire level has a great impact on the relationship, on a close encounter it is seen that the reason is often a very shameful and a buried secret deep inside the relationship.Spending more time together, working together towards finding solution can enliven the desire, a sex therapist could help in reaching that point. Stress, anxiety, fear can also lead to physiological problem like erectile dysfunction. This condition does not allow the patient to get erection which is required for doing intercourse. This condition is actually curable by means of medication and counseling, however depending on the severity of the condition only counseling can prove to be good enough for the treatment and the patient can get back his confidence after a few meetings with the counselor.

Things get worse when one partner puts the blame on the other one for the problem, try to be a little more positive towards your partner and ask him/her gently about the struggling, this will show that you are willing to share your partner’s problem and this could be the start of the healing process.

If you are the one who is having problem, say it clearly and describe it properly to your partner. Say it clearly if you want to get more sexually aroused before having intercourse or if you just want him/her  to change the approach. Doing the same wouldn’t leave your partner blank and will only strengthen the bond between you two. An honest and clear communication during sex is always preferable than just hiding it from the other one which will do nothing but make the situation more complex.

How to Stay Healthy During the Holiday Season

Day 157: Trying to Eat Healthy

If you associate the month of December with colds, sinus infections and the flu, you are not alone. Many people seem to have the bad misfortune of becoming sick right around the holiday season. Although there is no way to prevent every type of illness during this time of the year, there are some things you can do to help yourself stay well and healthy during the holiday season.

  • Keep Stress Levels in Check During the holiday season it is easy to get overwhelmed. There is often too much to do and not enough time to do it. There are parties to attend, gifts to buy, and family dinners to plan. When your body stays under stress for long periods of time, however, it can weaken your immune system and make you more susceptible to catching colds and the flu. If you are constantly feeling stressed out it is time to take make some changes and try to relax. Accept that you cannot do it all. Ask family members to help with holiday planning or skip some of the holiday events that you don’t really enjoy going to anyway. Make a point to take at least 15 minutes a day to clear your mind and simply “be.”
  • Clean Your Hands Germs often linger on objects after someone with a cold or the flu touches them. When you handle an infected object and then touch your mouth, nose, or eyes you may then acquire the virus yourself. To avoid this happening, it is important to wash your hands frequently during the day and especially if you are around someone that you suspect is sick. You may also find it helpful to carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer with you. Use it after shaking hands at holiday get-togethers, touching doorknobs, handling money, or talking on office telephones.
  • Catch Up on Your Sleep Holiday stress and a lack of sleep are the perfect combination for setting your body up to get sick. According to the NHS, most people sleep about 6 ½ hours, but medical studies have shown that most people need 7 to 9 hours of sleep a night. When this fails to happen and you get overly tired it allows your body to get run down. This can weaken and compromise your immune system. This means that if you come into contact with a cold or flu virus, your body has little chance of fighting it off and you will most likely become sick.
  • Eat Healthy Meals When you are busy taking care of your holiday to-do list it can become tempting to skip meals or settle for junk food. Make a point to eat healthy during the holiday season. Take fruit or raw cut-up vegetables with you as you run errands and snack on them when you are in your car. If you find you are eating unhealthy, it is a good idea to take a multivitamin each day to make up for missing nutrients.

The Healthcare Administrative Process in a Nutshell

    June 10, 2020 by

    DSC_0625

It is no secret that healthcare costs are on the rise. One of the significant factors attributed to the rise in healthcare costs is the increase in administrative spending in healthcare facilities. Healthcare organizations are dynamic and complex, and they need equally flexible and responsive administration to oversee the flow of information and services to allow a facility to provide effective healthcare. Healthcare administration involves a cohort of individuals. They not only must work to comply with existing healthcare laws, but they must also strive to improve efficiency and manage both the facilities and the finances of a healthcare provider.

Often healthcare administrators have unique specializations depending on the function of the facility at hand. These might include health information managers. These are the individuals responsible for the coordination and management of the flow of information between the various arms of a facility, including the information of patients, doctors, accountants, marketing and finance, and insurers. All of this information has to manage under one system, and this will involve extensive use of databases and information technology. Healthcare administrators are very concerned with financial reporting, and the healthcare administrator may have no medical training. Other specialization’s address various segments of the population such as nursing home administrators, veterans hospital administrators, as well as clinical managers. These are the individuals responsible for staff and organization at the clinical level. Often, healthcare administrators need specialized training to perform their duties, and states require varying degrees of licensure for the health care administrator to maintain their accreditation.

Managing a healthcare facility can be very complex, and decisions often have strong repercussions not only at the clinical level, but across an entire facility. For example, a change in the billing system that a facility uses to an upgraded system affects not just a small office where the system is implemented, or even the database of that system, but the entire operational apparatus of the healthcare facility. A healthcare administrator must keep this system running smoothly while still allowing the facility to provide patient care. No one would see a doctor if they were told by the staff that no patients were being seen because the system to check in patients was broken. Therefore, the task of integration is essential to good healthcare management, since embedding administrative rules into new and existing systems simplifies the system.

Thus, the nature and function of a healthcare facility require that the healthcare manager provide leadership as well as the supervision and coordination of employees in a healthcare organization, particularly in support of the necessary tasks involved in providing services. These require the coordination of many highly specialized disciplines that must work together faultlessly. Healthcare managers need to ensure that a healthcare organization’s tasks are carried out in the best possible way to achieve a healthcare organization’s goals. Importantly, the healthcare manager makes sure that the appropriate resources, including the financial and the human resources, are adequate to support a healthcare organizations operational goals.

Preparing Your Body for Egg Donation

    Woman Thinking

In Vitro Fertilization (IFV) is a method of providing couples, who are otherwise physically incapable, the opportunity to create a family and have a child of their own. This amazing technological achievement allows for a woman to become pregnant through an artificial process by means of creating an embryo outside the woman’s body rather than inside. The process can a complex multistage ordeal. Due to all the steps involved, failure of a successful pregnancy can occur at any point. However, there are steps one can do to ensure the best chances for success are in place. The most important thing you can do beforehand is quite simply, prepare. Preparation for all aspects of the IFV process is quite important, like selecting the best clinic and doctor, or the best donor if required. But one facet of preparation stands out significantly above the rest, which is preparing your body for this jarring and often stressful procedure.

Preparing your body for IFV is the single most important thing you can do to ensure the success and health of your coming baby. However, the key to preparing your body for IFV is to understand what the process entails and what effects it will have on your body as well as what it will require of you.

    Mind

Making sure your mind is ready for the challenges of IFV is the first step in preparing for it. Preparing in this sense does not have to be all inclusive either; take it slowly and create a proper mental inventory.  Emotional preperation should of course include things like considering the stresses of the IFV processes and the consequences of being a parent, but try to remember things like what-if scenarios. Be prepared by talking with your doctor, not about every possible problem that could arise since that causes unnecessary stress and does not help anyone, but rather about known previous problems you might have that could complicate things. Also remember to be able to adjust to the new stresses involved with IFV and the changes in schedules it will cause by allowing time for relaxation and natural stress reduction activities. Also make sure to communicate with your partner, they will share some of the same stresses you may have.  Having a strong support system is the foundation for great emotional preparation.

    Body- Nutrition

The next step in making sure your IFV is as successful as possible is to make sure your body has the necessary energy and nutrients to support yourself, accept the new embryo, and subsequently support it. The standard “eat healthy” tactic still applies, such as a balanced diet including healthy vegetables, fruits, meats, etc., but that alone is sometimes not enough. A daily multi-vitamin can be important in covering for any missed vitamins and minerals, but it is equally important to consume enough water and stay hydrated. The other side of nutrition is avoiding certain things in your daily life. There are obvious one like tobacco, alcohol and illicit drugs, all of which can cause damage to the embryo and elevates the chances of a birth defect. But there are some lesser known things to avoid in the IFV processes and during pregnancy itself. Chocolate and foods with a high-count of simple sugars and fats should be avoided, along with caffeine and other stimulants. But the one people forget about the most are the prescription drugs that are already being taken. It is important to discuss any medications currently being taken with your doctor. Many times the prescription drugs are harmless to the IFV and pregnancy process, but it is better to be safe and check with your doctor beforehand if the drug you are taking will create any complications.

    Body- Physical

The last step in preparing your body for IFV is to make sure it can handle the physical stresses that appear in the process. When beginning IFV, one should be neither overweight or underweight. Both make it difficult for the embryo to be successful in becoming attached to the uterine wall due to the changes made to your body from being either over or underweight. Try to be at a median healthy weight as discussed by your doctor, just be practical in trying to obtain the target weight. Over exercise or extreme diets can be more detrimental to your health than helpful, and they lower the success rates of IFV. Light exercise, such as walking, is the best option for women trying to become pregnant through IFV since it allows for a much less stressful and jarring physical stimulus, which can be detrimental to the development of an embryo.

Making preparations is the safest thing one can do if you are thinking about, or about to begin IFV. Preparing your body mentally, nutritionally and physically will allow for a greater chance of success and allow for a healthier, more enjoyable IFV experience.

Whether it’s a change in the temperature or there’s just a bug going around, it’s inevitable: At some point every year, the flu will hit you.  It doesn’t have to be completely miserable, though!  There is a handful of safe and natural things you can do to ease the symptoms.  Here are three in particular:

    1. 1.)     Elevate When You Sleep

No, we don’t mean you should hover over your bed.  Think about it: If you sleep flat—no matter which side it’s on—all the mucus in your nose and sinus has nowhere to go (except maybe back into your throat—ick!).  It just sits there.  If you lay on your back with your head slightly elevated, you’re giving the fluid a chance to drain while you’re sleeping!

    1. 2.)     There IS a Right and Wrong Way to Blow Your Nose!

When you can feel your nose running, it’s tempting to just sniffle it back inside.  That’s no good, though, because then you’re not actually getting rid of it; you’re merely moving it around.  Instead, always opt to blow your nose—gently!  If you do you do it too hard, you could damage something.

The experts recommend that you hold one nostril closed while gently blowing the other, alternating to each side.  This helps to clear out each nasal passage a little better than if you were to do both sides simultaneously, like many people do.  We know what you’re asking, though: What if you’re completely stuffed up?

    1. 3.)     Hot Showers are Good for More than Just Bathing

Steam helps loosen up mucus; so when you have the flu, it’s a good idea to get someplace steamy—stat!  Turn on the shower and crank up the heat; but don’t get in!  Close the bathroom door and sit inside while the room fills up with steam.  You’ll notice that it’ll become easier to blow your nose, like discussed earlier.

Another alternative to the shower idea is to let your sink fill with hot water and lean your head over it with a towel draped over you and the sink.  You can also get a mug of hot water and hold it near your face.

    1. 4.)     Control the Ambient Temperature

When you have the flu and you’re feeling a little warm, it might be tempting to open the window and let some of that cold winter air in; but don’t!  That frigid, dry air will utterly destroy your throat and simply prolong the illness!  In addition, exposing yourself to opposing extreme temperatures is bad for you in general.  Find a way to gradually cool your body down.  Maybe you change into clothes that can breathe a little better, or you turn down the thermostat.

These four things are a great start, but don’t forget the basics: things like religious hand washing, keeping your body covered in cooler temperatures, and never sharing items like drinking cups and lip balm.

About 20% of Canadians over 65 are suffer from Alzheimer’s

    June 10, 2020 by

We have all heard of age related health problems and diseases like kidney failures, cardio-vascular problems, Parkinson’s disease, senility and memory losses leading to dementia that affect the elderly. Alzheimer’s is just another form of dementia, which leads to progressive memory loss. There are many ways in which we can help those suffering from such debilitating diseases and assist them to lead quality lives in their sunset years. About 20% of Canadians above the age of 65 are suffering from Alzheimer’s according to a survey. So, there are many research studies being done about the causes and the spread of the disease. Properly understanding the causes and the way it affects the patients’ brain cells can help the researchers to develop better drugs and the doctors to come up with better ways of treating it.

A recent study done by a research team in the University of Michigan suggests that certain sizes of the ‘clumps’ of proteins seem to be detrimental to the brain cells around them, as they ‘prick’ holes in the neurons. The team has also found that the smaller clumps or larger clumps seem to have no negative effect at all. This research was recently published in the online journal, Public Library of Science One. Many scientists believe that this latest research will provide an impetus to pharmaceutical companies to come up with a drug to fight the disease as we now know how it affects the brain cells.

In the research paper titled ‘Multivariate analyses of amyloid-beta oligomer populations’ indicate a connection between pore formation and cytotoxicity’, the leader of the research team, Prof. Michael Mayer claims that the mid-length aggregates or clumps of the protein amyloid-beta peptides, are the most dangerous as they prick holes into the neurons surrounding them, with prolonged exposure. Working with eminent scientists from the University of California, San Diego, Prof. Mayer and his team have establsihed that the protein amyloid beta peptide, in certain aggregates is toxic and affects the synaptic plasticity of neurons, which means it punches holes in the cell membranes. This leads to uncontrolled flow of calcium ions, which in turn affects the communication between neurons. This result is supported by evidence gathered from autopsy reports conducted on patients with Alzheimer’s which show extracellular plaque formation in their brains.

And the research has brought another startling fact to light. The popular generic medicine Bapineuzumab, administered to patients suffering from Alzheimer’s has come under scrutiny. The drug is meant to prevent larger aggregates of the protein, which have been proved to be benign. In fact, the team working under Prof. Mayer, who heads the Bio-Medical department and also lectures in Chemical Engineering, has conducted research which suggests that smaller and larger clumps of the protein might inhibit the flow of calcium ions and actually slow down the cell degeneration.

A student and researcher under Prof. Mayer has established that the size range of amyloid clumps which formed the most pores, were also the most toxic; in the culture samples that used lipid membranes to mimic cell membranes, studied from 0 – 20 days, the resulting correlation between the aggresive pore-forming clumps and their toxicity was astounding. Further using sophisticated statistical models, the team was able to conclude that the pore-formation by certain aggregates of the amyloid-beta is responsible for cell-death in neurons.

In another research study done by the University of Haifa, the focus was on understanding the mechanisms which lead to Alzheimer’s as a result of molecular response to the metabolic distress that occurs with advancing years. In a study published in the Neurobiology of Ageing, the Department of Neurobiology team has establlsihed a firm link between the protein eIF2alpha and Alzheimer’s disease. The study, co-authored by a Canadian team claims that it is possible to prevent or even reverse the loss of cognitive abilities in Alzheimer’s patients, by regulating the eIF2alpha protien as it is responsible for the creation of protein in all cells. There are many teams around the world researching the protein now in a bid to come with a way to treat Alzheimer’s even after the patient’s memory has been affected.
