Obesity Costly to Airlines

Obesity’s fast becoming a problem in the nation’s skies. A little extra weight means a little extra cost for the airline. The bottom line of many airlines is being hurt by the expanding bottoms of some passengers.
Dr. Andrew Dannenberg, Disease Control and Prevention: “As the average weight of the American public has gone up and airlines are having to fly more weight.”
More weight means higher costs. A survey in 2000 revealed airlines were spending an extra 275 million dollars a year in fuel costs just to carry the extra weight. Doctor Andrew Dannenberg with the Centers for Disease Control says there is no danger to the public, because the FAA has already factored in extra weight.
Ten years ago, airlines estimated passenger weight at an average 180 pounds. In 2003, they upped the average by ten pounds.
Dr. Andrew Dannenberg: “The average weight of all Americans has gone up by about 10 pounds over the past decade, so the cost of fuel has gone up. It’s not large people flying, it’s the average weight of all fliers that has gone up.”
It’s no secret that added fuel costs have contributed to increased ticket prices. Some airlines, like Southwest, are also requiring what they call “customers of size” to pay for two seats instead of one.

Week 34 has passed .. and pretty much the Year 2006 too – an Update

Wow. Almost 9 months behind on keeping track since January 1, 2006 .. I need to recoup and think all of this out. But, in summary – let me see if I can summarize a little ..
* December 31, 2005 I was 257 lbs.
* Sometime in March 2006 I was 254 lbs. I think this was my all-time low. I’m not sure though, because I wasn’t counting points or weighing myself
* Sometime in April or May 2006 .. we purchased a much superior and accurate weigh scale .. and it turns out our old scale was approximately 6 lbs lighter than being indicated.
* I probably gained about 5-10 lbs during my busy “tax season”, which is pretty much March through to June 2006
* Summer came and cottage life in a restricted vehicle zone .. I purchased a new bicycle and was riding it a lot and walking during the summer weekends Fridays thru Sundays. I’m pretty sure I kept losing weight, and if not – I certainly was getting good exercise!
* Unfortunately, working Mondays to Thursdays has been putting a strain on my workload, and I have been working sometimes all-nighters, and not really getting out to exercise during the week. I’m pretty sure any gains that I have made during the weekends – were for naught – during the week.
* I have weighed myself recently and I am not happy – in fact, despite that I feel healthier than I was during the beginning of the year, the weigh scale definately shows that I have deteriorated in my goal to lose weight.
Meanwhile, I know this blog hasn’t been updated much during the past many months .. probably from my guilt in not keeping up with this project on a personal level. So, I have decided to get back in shape. I have been reshaping my personal goals and getting back on the straight line – which is to follow the plan – HART: Getting in Shape.
So .. while I am getting back on track .. I will be posting some Ezine Articles here in this blog .. kind of a motivation tool for myself, really … that will be related to exercise, dieting and health in general. In the upcoming weeks a new blogger will also be co-blogging with me … Gerry (from Planet Earth site).

7,389,432 Weight Loss Tips Guaranteed To Help You Lose Weight
By Donovan Baldwin
A week or so ago, I was in the check-out line at the supermarket and saw a blurb on the cover of a magazine. The headline read: “Breakthrough! FAT LOSS VITAMIN!”, and the text beneath it said, “95% of us don’t get enough. Safely boost your intake and:
Lose 5 lbs a week!
Burn 30% more fat every day!”
The magazine was Woman’s World.
Being in the business of health, fitness, diet and weight loss, this claim intrigued me so I threw a copy of the magazine in the buggy, and read the article when I got home.
Very briefly, here’s what the article had to say: Most people don’t get enough Vitamin C, and Vitamin C can help your body burn more fat.
Now, this was interesting, and since I believe most people don’t get the nutrients they need, I was willing to go along with the idea of increasing your normal intake of Vitamin C, either by increasing the amount of things such as orange juice, which is good for you anyway and it contains a lot of Vitamin C, or by use of Vitamin C supplements.
The information in the article made sense, and, when I did a little independent online investigation, I found that apparently the article was reasonably accurate. I don’t have a particular problem with the information in this article, and agree that increasing Vitamin C could help someone lose weight.
This brings us to the slightly exaggerated title of this article.
Everyday, it seems we are bombarded with all these claims about weight loss, fat loss, diets and health. One person says their pill will deal with cortisol, which is the cause of weight gain. Another says their diet will “melt” the fat. Someone else wants to hypnotize you, and that will do the trick. The covers of many other magazines at the checkout on the day I bought my magazine had different tips, hints, diets, and weight loss solutions.
All these people can’t be telling the truth, can they?
Is weight gain the result of cortisol, poor diet, lack of exercise, not enough Vitamin C, lack of sleep, stress, too much beer, or just bad genes?
Actually, the answer to both questions is, “Yes…sort of…”
The actual biological process by which people get fat is known. The solution is also known, and it doesn’t have much to do with Vitamin C, cortisol, genes, or a lot of other things…directly.
A runner who wishes to run faster gets there by training at running and trying to run faster. However, that runner can also strengthen his or her legs by using weight training. They can improve their performance, or perhaps reach their goal faster, by eating a certain type of diet…maybe even making changes in that diet at different points of their training or competition schedule. If stress is inhibiting their performance, learning to meditate might help them put that stress behind them or at least relieve it enough so that their times improve. If their home life or work schedule is such that it interferes with their training, rest, or nutrition schedules, then making a change in those areas may improve their athletic performance.
Even so, the main thing in their running training is…running! Everything else just helps with the speed of development or the amount of progress that is ultimately made.
The same thing applies to most weight loss situations and so-called solutions. Increasing physical activity and eating reasonably are the two major things that bring about healthy, permanent weight loss. If, in your exercise program, you choose to supplement with Vitamin C, or get more sleep, or take something which reduces the effects of cortisol, or quit your job because it interferes with your weight loss program, then you will probably enhance the results. You will lose more weight over time, lose the weight a bit faster, or just find the whole process easier. However, the major portion of the weight loss (and improved health and enjoyment of life), comes from the basics of exercise and nutrition.
So what about the people who DID lose weight by breathing properly, or taking Vitamin C, or adding Chocolate to their diet?
People are all different, and so are the facts and factors of their lifestyles, education, upbringing, and genetic makeup. Someone who is one dress size bigger than she wants to be may get all the weight loss she needs from increasing HER Vitamin C intake. That does NOT mean that every woman will experience the SAME results. Another woman may need to lose a lot more than one dress size, and taking Vitamin C, while it might help her shed a few pounds and be more healthy overall, will probably NOT produce anywhere near the total results she hopes to achieve. If, however, she IS doing the right things to bring about weight loss, adding the Vitamin C may speed the process a bit and help get her to her goal a little faster,
Just as in the title of this article, the key word in all these claims is “help” whether it is stated or merely implied. True healthy, permanent weight loss will be the result of a combination of activity and nutrition. All the other things, which may certainly be of value, are just helping.

Chinese cancer therapy drawing foreign patients

CTV.ca News Staff
A revolutionary anti-tumour drug in China is attracting terminally ill cancer patients from around the world, including Canada.
The world’s first “gene therapy” drug, named Gendicine, was officially licensed by the Chinese government in late 2003 after clinical trials found it noticeably improved the survival rate of patients with head and neck cancer, which are common in China.
Injected directly into the tumour, Gendicine is designed to destroy cancerous genes. The key ingredient is the p53 gene, described as a tumour-suppressing gene and which is mixed with a common virus.
Although Western regulators have yet to approve the therapy, some cancer patients in North America are willing to take the risk.
“Initially, there were concerns, but I’m into the treatment now, and I’ll see it through to the end,” British Columbia resident Terry McKenzie told CTV News.
McKenzie has travelled to Beijing’s Haidian Hospital, a cancer clinic located in the heart of the city’s university district, where specialists have injected Gendicine into a tumour in his liver. He also received a host of other drugs, including Endostar, which cuts off the blood supply to his tumours.
Like Gendicine, Endostar is another drug that is only currently available in China, although a related drug, Avastin, is on the market in North America.
Patients who come to the clinic can also receive standard treatments, like chemotherapy.
The clinic’s Director, Dr. Li Dingguang, who spent five years at Johns Hopkins University in the United States, refers to this as a “kitchen sink” approach. “More therapies better results, longer life for the cancer patients,” was how he put it.
Experts openly question the Chinese government’s willingness to approve new cancer drugs that are still in their experimental stages in North America.
As one Wall Street Journal article on Endostar noted: “The hurdles to getting Endostar approved for general use in the U.S. are high. It has only been tested in China, and it’s not clear whether those trials meet U.S. and European standards. The results of the trials have yet to be published in any Western peer-reviewed medical journals. The exact mechanism by which Endostar inhibits tumors from building a blood supply is unknown.”
Gene therapy researcher Dr. Jeffrey Medin questioned the whole “kitchen sink” philosophy, saying: “We’re not really sure what are the combined effects of some of these things. So, in theory, these things could be positive but they could also have negative consequences.”
Li Dingguang refused to elaborate on how effective the procedures are — even though the hospital charges tens of thousands of dollars for the treatment.
But for McKenzie, who is now able to eat and drink without pain, the prospect of other treatments is proving hard to resist.
“It’s given me tremendous hope, tremendous,” he said.
Where there’s hope, there’s opportunity. Business Week magazine reported that China’s State Council decided last spring to essentially double research and development spending. Within that, biotechnology has been designated a priority area.
Some Chinese scientists say clinical trials cost only about one-tenth of what they do in North America, and the overall regulatory climate is more favourable in their country. The more freewheeling environment is tweaking the interest of some American researchers.
Boldness in medicine, however, can come with a cost. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration shut down some gene therapy trials after one patient died in 1999 and others developed cancers as a result of their treatments.

It’s Not Your Imagination:Tobacco Giants Fight to Keep Smokers Hooked
By Annette Baril
These days, it seems that the message regarding the dangers of smoking is crystal clear. Whether it be on tv, the side of the local bus, or on the internet, advertising has taken a drastic turn from the past days of luring teens to smoke.
With an estimated 70 percent of smokers wanting to quit, and 40 percent who make the attempt annually, some may wonder why it seems more difficult than ever to break the deadly habit.
It Is Not All In Your Mind:
While there is no question that smoking is the most addictive substance, recent reports from the Massachusetts Department of Public Health indicate that the levels of nicotine in cigarettes have been increased between the years 1998 through 2004. The average increase is 10 percent, with brands such as Kool and Doral weighing in at 30 to 36 percent. According to an article in USA TODAY, smokers also affect their own nicotine intake based on how deeply they inhale. This may also affect which part of the lungs develop cancer, with those who take shallow puffs more prone to developing cancer in the upper lungs.
With these increases, the tobacco industry is insuring the odds that you will continue to be a return customer each and every day. It is simply a business decision from their standpoint.
Your recent attempts may have proved unsuccessful, and it may simply be the fact that you are now struggling against an even stronger nicotine addiction.
However, you need not be a victim if you decide that you desire to give up this senseless, expensive, life threatening habit.
As there are always solutions to every problem, recent technological breakthroughs have emerged to conquer this issue. One such innovation is available here in the US brought over from Europe by Rick Tejpaul. It is a process that enables you to naturally withdraw from nicotine without the uncomfortable cravings. Tejpaul states, “We make sure that each one of our clients are taken care of from the moment they make the appointment to when they finally leave smoke-free after a few short treatments.” Along with the actual treatment, your smoking habits and history are analyzed, so that a plan can be customized specifically for you.
