In Darwin's time, island biogeography was the science that opened Victorian minds to the wonder of evolution. Today with all the world's wild landscape being chopped into island-like fragments, it's the science of jeopardy and extinction. This book combines science, historical narrative and travel.

This report was created for global strategic planners who cannot be content with traditional methods of segmenting world markets. With the advent of a borderless world, cities become a more important criteria in prioritizing markets, as opposed to regions, continents, or countries. This report covers the top 2000 cities in over 200 countries. It does so by reporting the estimated market size (in terms of latent demand) for each major city of the world. It then ranks these cities and reports them in terms of their size as a percent of the country where they are located, their geographic region (e.g. Africa, Asia, Europe, Middle East, North America, Latin America), and the total world market. In performing various economic analyses for its clients, I have been occasionally asked to investigate the market potential for various products and services across cities. The purpose of the studies is to understand the density of demand within a country and the extent to which a city might be used as a point of distribution within its region. From an economic perspective, however, a city does not represent a population within rigid geographical boundaries. To an economist or strategic planner, a city represents an area of dominant influence over markets in adjacent areas. This influence varies from one industry to another, but also from one period of time to another. In what follows, I summarize the economic potential for the world's major cities for whole fryer-roaster turkeys under 16 weeks of age for the year 2007. The goal of this report is to report my findings on the real economic potential, or what an economist calls the latent demand, represented by a city when defined as an area of dominant influence. The reader needs to realize that latent demand may or may not represent real sales. For many items, latent demand is clearly observable in sales, as in the case for food or housing items. Since the first edition the The Little Ice Age, was published in 1988, interest in climatic history has grown rapidly and research in the area has flourished. A vast amount of new data has become available from sources such as ice cores, speleothems and tree-rings. The picture that we have of past climates and glacier oscillations has extended further into the past and has become more detailed. However, the knowledge of climate change on the decennial and centennial time-scale, to which glacier history can contribute, is scarce and is in demand for attempting to predict future change, especially with regard to global warming. New chapters and material have been included throughout the book and these tend to confirm and elaborate on earlier conclusions of the first edition.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for stemmed aged leaf tobacco packed for sale across the prefectures and cities of Japan. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,000 cities in Japan. For each city in question, the percent share the city is of its prefecture and of Japan is reported. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-`-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each prefecture and city, latent demand estimates are created for stemmed aged leaf tobacco packed for sale. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. The study, therefore, is strategic in nature, taking an aggregate and long-run view, irrespective of the players or products involved.

This study covers the latent demand outlook for stemmed aged leaf tobacco packed for sale across the regions of Greater China, including provinces, autonomous regions (Guangxi, Nei Mongol, Ningxia, Xinjiang, Xizang - Tibet), municipalities (Beijing, Chongqing, Shanghai, and Tianjin), special administrative regions (Hong Kong and Macau), and Taiwan (all hereafter referred to as regions). Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 1,100 cities in Greater China. For each major city in question, the percent share the city is of the region and of Greater China is reported. Each major city is defined as an area of economic population, as opposed to the demographic population within a legal geographic boundary. For many cities, the economic population is much larger that the population within the city limits; this is especially true for the cities of the Western regions. For the coastal regions, cities which are close to other major cities or which represent, by themselves, a high percent of the regional population, actual city-level population is closer to the economic population (e.g. in Beijing). Based on this economic definition of population, comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a citys marketing and distribution value vis-`-vis others. This exercise is quite useful for persons setting up distribution centers or sales force strategies. Using econometric models which project fundamental economic dynamics within each region and city of influence, latent demand estimates are created for stemmed aged leaf tobacco packed for sale. This report does not discuss the specific players in the market serving the latent demand, nor specific details at the product level. The study also does not consider short-term cyclicalities that might affect realized sales. This study covers the latent demand outlook for stemmed aged leaf tobacco packed for sale across the states, union territories and cities of India. Latent demand (in millions of U.S. dollars), or potential industry earnings (P.I.E.) estimates are given across some 5,000 cities in India. These comparative benchmarks allow the reader to quickly gauge a city vis-`-vis others. This statistical approach can prove very useful to distribution and/or sales force strategies. DIVThe automaton is the playful collaboration of the artist and the artisan, with sculpture, painting, music, costume, and mechanics all playing a part in its creation. In IAutomata: The Golden Age,/I Christian Bailly opens with a depiction of mid-19th-century Paris, where French automaton-makers lived and worked. There follow the little-known histories of the seven leading makers, from their establishment mid-century to the decline of production after the First World War. Here, for the first time, names, dates, and chronologies are accurately established to present a reference of inestimable value. In addition, more than 150 automata are photographed in color, with many more depicted in facsimile pages from vintage catalogs./DIV

Spanish Cities of the Golden Age reveals again the cities of that fabulous and lost world in their glory, and introduces a superlative artist. There are 45 complete, subtly colored panoramas of cities of Wyngaerde. . . . A fine contribution to the history of architecture but an even greater one to the history of the era when they were drawn.--New York Times Book ReviewIn the sixteenth century Spain was at the height of its glory, enjoying a period of exceptional power, wealth, and artistic splendor. In 1561 Philip II commissioned Europe's leading topographical artist, Anton van den Wyngaerde, to prepare cities and towns of his Golden Age empire. Van den Wyngaerde spent most of his time traveling in Spain from 1561 until his death in 1571, preparing views--many the earliest known depictions--of no fewer than sixty-two cities and towns, including Barcelona, Valencia, Zaragoza, Granada, Coroba, Seville, Toledo, Burgos, and Madrid. These drawings not only record Spain's cities during the most glorious moments in their history but also depict them with a precision that can almost be described as photographic.
